HEIMAT. A SENSE OF BELONGING

“I started to discover avant-garde cinema and art while a student at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts in 1962: movies like Fritz Lang’s Metropolis and Josef von Sternberg’s The Blue Angel with Marlene Dietrich, the Berlin of the ’20s and ’30s. It left a significant impression on me, learning about Bertolt Brecht’s plays and Kurt Weill’s music, as well as about painters like Max Beckmann, George Grosz and Otto Dix, Kurt Schwitters and the Dada movement. Italian neo-realist cinema, Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Mamma Roma, Federico Fellini’s 8 1⁄2, Luchino Visconti’s Ossessione… The world appeared right in front of me, a nineteen-year-old who wanted to learn about everything.”

FILMS BEING SCREENED
The Film Series expands the narrative path of the exhibition through film productions by Peter Lindbergh himself, inspiring movies and authors who over time have forged ties of collaboration and friendship with the photographer. The common thread is the centrality of the female character, presented through a pure and authentic gaze, free from fickle idealizations. These are the same characters found in Lindbergh’s work, whose vision was in turn influenced by German cinema and the industrial environment in which he spent his childhood.
