BÜŞRA KAYIKÇI

Born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey, the pianist and composer was introduced to artistic interests such as piano, ballet, and painting at an early age. After high school she turned to interior design and studied interior architecture and environmental design, but eventually found the creative freedom she sought in composition.

The songs from her new album “Places”, written during the lockdown, follow the principles that the artist has translated from architecture to her creative work. Just as in order to design a space harmoniously, one must first learn to define elements and then combine them together bringing them into balance; similarly with music, the artist lets the audience move within her architecture. Inspired by modern classical composers such as John Cage and Michael Nyman, among her most significant interdisciplinary projects to date is the collaboration with the New York Theater Ballet in 2020 and with Melissa Toogood who conceived a contemporary dance choreography based on Kayıkçı’s music.
